Hello all, I am happy that you got my point. As I said, it is by no means an incentive for what Zed did, on the contrary: I am absolutely against ‘rage against the machine’ style. Not only here, but even when we talk ‘against Microsoft’, ‘against Linux’ or whatever.

I still believe that both the Ruby and Rails community are great families, I learned a lot from all of you guys.

On the other hand, as a family I think we should help ‘solve’ issues, not ‘hiding’ them. Zed did some correct things buried in a lot of profanity. I hope he reads my article one day to see that it is possible to expose bad things without offending anyone.

If we have problems, let us learn from them and help improve the community. We are all human beings here. We make mistakes. Whenever I make mistakes I hope people point them out for me so I can apologize and make them right. I am totally favorable of receiving criticism, it just makes me a better person.

Peter Cooper seems to have a similar opinion. I just posted an interview I did with him a few days ago plus his take on this Zed Rant episode. I hope you like it.

Perhaps I do need to take a chill pill. :-) If I over-reacted I apologize. On the other hand, Mike Clark is a very nice man who is a great asset to the Rails community. It’s a shame to see his name disparaged along with some other people who are also very nice and great assets, as well. This whole thing is a very sad way for the Rails community to start a new year…

Good post Fabio—I, for one, thought it was nice to get a redux of Zed’s rant without having to read through all the #%$@ words he used.

And it’s true – if the Rails community can’t handle one massive flame like this, probably something is wrong. Isn’t open source about continual refinement, anyway?

Wow, two comments firing away at you for taking a moderate position on Zed’s rant.

I feel that you did, in fact, add something to it – a moderate viewpoint. And I appreciate that. Zed’s rhetorical strategy – pissing vitriol everywhere – is unfortunate because it does subtract from legitimate points in his criticism. Zed says several times in his rant that he’s not the greatest guy – he’s right about that, too. But perhaps some points he has made will find their way into making changes in the community, especially if level-headed people are able to do the work Zed should, given his age and the level of maturity that’s supposed to go along with his age, be able to do himself – separate the message from the means of its delivery.

Hi Jake. Hm, I know what you mean I am sorry. That’s because I write both portuguese (brazilian) and sometimes translate my own articles into english for everybody else.

The original article works because not everybody in Brazil can read english well. Though I thought that it would be easier for some to read his main claims minus the grunting parts.

Hi Ken, I am very very sorry. I didn’t mean to offend Mike. I don’t know either Kevin nor Mike (that’s why I explicitly said I couldn’t agree or disagree), but both have Clark as a lastname and I confused the names.

I was not intending to mean anything against neither. No offense really. I apologize for the typo.

You are incorrect in your little “I support Zed” piece above. Mike Clark is not mentioned in Zed’s immature, pathetic little temper tantrum. Kevin Clark is mentioned 33 times but Mike Clark is not mentioned at all. I think you owe a HUGE apology to Mike Clark for dragging his name into this muck. Maybe you should get your facts straight before jumping in the mud with Zed. You both look dirty.
